讲座人简介:

吴始年,西安外国语大学西外学者特聘教授。1982年毕业于西安外国语学院,获英语语言文学学士学位;1988年毕业于美国北亚利桑那大学,获英语作为第二语言教学硕士学位;1988年就读美国特拉华大学攻读理论语言学博士学位;1995年毕业于北亚利桑那大学,获应用语言学博士学位。1995年起先后任美国南伊利诺大学英语系讲师,美国加州蒙特雷国际研究院教育语言学研究生院助理教授,美国加州州立大学蒙特雷分校专业教育中心客座助理教授,中国西北大学外国语学院访问教授,德国格蒙特教育大学英语系访问教授,美国密歇根州宏谷州立大学区域研究中心东亚学科主任、英语系教授、系副主任、应用语言学硕士项目主任。

讲座内容简介:

Educational systems around the world differ in their scope and focus as they are designed to meet country-specific educational challenges for their learners. Second language education programs that train language teachers are no exception. In this talk, I report a study that compared three postgraduate applied linguistics/TESOL programs—one at XISU, one at the UK’s Kingston University London, and one at Grand Valley State University in the US—in terms of their curricular models. The intellectually intriguing question is “Are they equally effective in building confidencein future teachers for the kinds of English learning populations they respectively serve?” Field data have been collected to illustrate knowledge and skill areas covered by each program and caveats in interpreting effectiveness in specific demographic contexts.
