Liu Qiyao was the former Chairman of the Soviet Government of Jiangxi Province. During the Long March in October 1934, he was ordered to stay in the Soviet Area to fight against guerrillas and lead the troops to break through. Zeng Shan, secretary of the Communist Party of Jiangxi Province at that time, handed over a satchel to him with about thirteen gold bars and a great deal of silver dollars and jewelry, expenses of the Communist Party of Jiangxi Province. He wrapped the satchel in the oilcloth and secretly buried it in a pile of boulders where few people treaded. In one bloodbath, he was seriously injured. To escape from the enemy¡¯s tracking down and arresting, he hid in a cave during the day and went out for herbals to heal his wounds at night, living a wild life with only wild fruits to survive. Six months later, before he was fully recovered, he ran to the place where the money was buried. He took out the satchel, tied it around his waist, and began to go down the hill in search of the Party.

Liu Qiyao planned to find the main force of the Red Army. On the way, he found the Kuomintang Army set up many checkpoints to arrest people everywhere, so he had to conceal his identity, being stranded in Suichuan and Wan¡¯an area in Jiangxi Province. He wandered around the villages, drank spring water when feeling thirsty, begged from the nearby residents when feeling hungry, and slept at the tea pavilion or in a temple during the night.

Several months passed, but no one knew him. He was clothed in rags with dishevelled hair and a dirty face, looking like a beggar. But in fact he was the Chairman of the Soviet Government of Jiangxi Province. He had a large amount of gold and jewelry with him, living a life of a beggar without spending a penny of the Party¡¯s expenses.

While searching for the Party, Liu Qiyao connected many soldiers and cadres scattering in the Soviet Area. When he gathered about 120 people together in 1937, they set up a Temporary Jiangxi Provincial Committee to continue their revolutionary struggle.

However, money was crucial for the revolutionary struggle. When no one knew what to do, Liu Qiyao removed the dirty satchel from his waist and placed it on the table. He presented the thirteen gold bars and the same amount of silver dollars and jewelry in front of everyone, just the same as what Zeng Shan had given him. No one ever thought that the skinny, disease-ridden Liu Qiyao was such a wealthy beggar.
