Xiao Lin and His Wife, "The Millionaire Proletarians"
In 1941, Xiao Lin, an underground member of the Communist Party of China, was instructed by Zhou Enlai to set up a company with his wife Wang Minqing to raise funds for the Party's activities. By the time they completed their mission in 1949, they had handed in about 120,000 taels of gold and more than 10 million dollars in fixed assets to the Party organization at one time.
Xiao Lin, whose real name was Xiao Benren, joined the Communist Party of China in 1939, and "Xiao Lin" was his pseudonym. When the Southern Anhui Incident broke out in 1941, the National Government suspended the pay of the 18th Army. In order to break the economic blockade of the Kuomintang reactionaries, Zhou Enlai , then the secretary of the Southern Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, appointed Xiao Lin to go into business and carry out economic activities to raise funds for the Party. After accepting the task, Xiao Lin started learning capital lending, gold and dollars trading in the currency trading market, and at last made some profits. In April 1941 , Xiao Lin and his wife Wang Minqing returned to Jiangjin to start the commercial firm named " Hengyuan".
Xiao Lin and his wife firmly kept Zhou Enlai's words in mind,. "Don't be afraid of being said to be mercenary. You make money not for personal gain, but for the great cause of the Party." The money earned by Xiao Lin proved to be an important economic guarantee for the Party. As long as he received instructions from his superiors, he could always send the money to the designated place in time.
After the liberation of Shanghai in May 1949, Xiao Lin joined the Light Industry Department of the Military Administration Commission and took over the China Textile Company. He handed over his previous operating surplus to the Party, which was about 120,000 taels of gold and fixed assets of more than 10 million dollars, leaving only three silver coins in circulation then as a memento. Therefore, he was called "a millionaire proletarian". In 1997, Xiao Lin donated the three silver dollars, which he had kept for more than 40 years, to the museum.
